Welcome to the CERN Volleyball Club

Season 2022/2023

If you intend on joining the club, best to do it at the start of the season (September), but you can join the club at any time of the year !

The Club

The CERN Volleyball Club is a CERN club but open to people from both inside and outside CERN who enjoy playing volleyball indoor as well as outdoor: beach volley and grass volley.

Two teams play in the Club:
Male team – CERN I
Mixed Team – CERN II

Each team competes in the AGVB Championship which starts in September/October and runs until May.

Mixed Teams – CERN II and CERN III

Currently we have 2 teams in the mixed section (at least 3 girls in the field):

    • CERN II playing in the highest relax category XA
    • CERN III playing in the lower category XD

and we have the trainings all together, see the “trainings” section below for the details. See the official SVRGE webpage to consult current results.

How to join

Usually at the beginning of the season in September we allow new players to come for a Wednesday/Friday practice (or Tuesday, if it is not overcrowded) to try without any obligations. After September, or later after few trainings if you joined in the middle of the season, players are required to pay a membership fee 100CHF to participate in the trainings. Reduced fees might be approved by the president on a case-by-case basis. Around October usually the league starts and we will need to choose the core teams (normally 9 players per match to allow flexible substitutions) for the matches, which of course need to be best players from our section. You can choose (or the coach will choose) whether you prefer to stay with CERN II or CERN III, but players are not allowed to participate in 2 leagues at the same time.
To come for the trial training(s), first please contact one of us:

    • Giulia Gnemmi (section responsible): giulia.gnemmi@cern.ch
    • Ivan Slipukhin (assistant coach, league organization responsible): ivan.slipukhin@cern.ch
    • Pawel Ptasznik (technical support): pptaszni@cern.ch

and subscribe to mixed team mailing list  (important to receive recent info about trainings).

Indoor Trainings

We have trainings 3 times a week, each of them in a different place and with slightly different purpose.

Tuesdays 20.00 – 22.00

Training in La Golette (Meyrin https://goo.gl/maps/2g86b6JvjRpEdgi29) focused on CERN II. Normally number of participants is limited to 14 players and CERN II players that regularly come for the matches have the priority. This slot is also reserved for CERN II home matches. When there is a match, normal training is cancelled.

Wednesdays 20.00 – 22.00

Training in CEC André Chavannes (Grand-Saconnex https://goo.gl/maps/K5ZufGCvvXShzGoL9) focused on CERN III. Normally number of participants is limited to 14 players and CERN III players that regularly come for the matches have the priority. Very often during these trainings we prioritize individual techniques development and players skills progression. This slot is also reserved for CERN III home matches. When there is a match, normal training is cancelled.

Fridays 20.00 – 22.00

Training in CEPTA ( Petit Lancy https://goo.gl/maps/S6ewFA8jk2EUJyYN9) or Grandes Communes (Petit Lancy https://goo.gl/maps/rAX78B7YBQvYZbRo6) – depending on availability. Type of the training is usually decided ad-hoc, depending on available players. We still try to limit number of participants to 14 to avoid chaotic and dangerous situations.

Subscriptions to the trainings

Subscription to the training is mandatory, currently we are using WhatsApp group for this. Once you signal your interest in joining the club, one of the section responsible will send you an invite link. Avoid last minute changed to your subscription, especially on Tue/Wed when we often need to plan the training in advance to prepare for the coming matches. Use your REAL Name and Surname (John Smith, not noobmaster69). Before each training around lunchtime one of the organizers will send an email with the list with confirmed participants, so make sure you are subscribed to the mailing list mentioned before.

Pizza 🙂

After our trainings we often go for beer/pizza to La Meyrenoise . Preview some time after training and join us :).

Educational materials

If you have never played volleyball in 1-5 system (1 setter, 5 other players with specific functions) it might be a good idea to read about Positions and Rotations to avoid confusion during our practice games.

Male Team – CERN I

The male team competes in the season 2020/2021 in the league “1L, Group A” (playing schedule).
